Be Creative With Your KidsFeeding wild birds is a necessary winter activity. These fun outdoor activities help birds find food when natural sources are scarce and get you and your kids outside during the winter months.
Build a Snowman Bird Feeder
Get outside in the frosty snow and build a snowman, then decorate him with treats for birds. Make peanut butter and bird seed buttons, use suet blocks for eyes and nose, and sprinkle black oil sunflower seeds on the snowman from head to toe. You can also use corn cobs, millet and thistle to decorate your snowman. Use your imagination and be creative.
Milk Carton Bird House
Open a milk carton from the top and wash it thoroughly. Staple the top shut. Cut a 2 1/2 inch hole on one side, then make tiny holes underneath the hole to slide a perch into. Paint and decorate the birdhouse however you would like. Attach a wire or string through the top to hang the birdhouse. Put a layer of bedding (dried leaves, straw or similar material) in the bottom to keep the birds warm.

Go for a nature walk and gather a few pine cones. Tie a string around the pine cone so you can hang it from a tree branch. Cover the pinecone with peanut butter, then roll it in mixed bird seed. Hang it outside and watch to see what birds come to visit.
Inexpensive Bird BathFill a plant saucer tray or pie pan with clean gravel, and put a rock in the middle for birds to sit on and to weight it down. Fill it with water and check it every day to break the ice and refill it with fresh water. Birds need fresh water, so be sure to check it often!
